Chungjang Festival: the memories carried by Gwangju’s streets
At Chungjang Festival, the street is not just a route to a venue: it is the subject. Born from an older commercial district and its residents’ memories, the festival loses some of its meaning if you only collect a headline stage performance. Read the shopping streets and community processions together.

Confirmed edition dates · 2026 edition
The official tourism listing’s 7–11 October 2026 edition has ended. The next parade days, closed roads and performance locations need a new timetable and map.
Official website ↗Notice who makes and carries a city’s memories
A community precursor in 2003, Chungjang in 2004
The official history describes the community-backed Seoseok Festival in 2003 as a precursor, followed by the first Chungjang street festival in 2004. Reviving the older centre and memories of the 1970s and 1980s help explain its beginnings. Old songs and street scenes are linked to the effort to bring people back, not merely nostalgic decoration.
The processions do not all tell the same story
In 2026, the K Parade featured competition teams from around Korea, while the Golden Parade brought participants and selected teams together for the finale. Read the team introductions as well as watching costumes and movement: which place or community is being represented? That adds a human subject to the spectacle.

DAY
Chungjang-ro: notice shops and side streets
Outside a parade, give the shopping street attention of its own. Walk with the question of who might have met here in earlier decades, then choose one shop that interests you rather than trying to cover every lane.

K Parade · 17:00–19:00
A national competition procession on Geumnam-ro on 10 October 2026. Watching from one permitted section makes it easier to compare teams’ dress, music and movement.

Golden Parade · 18:00–20:00
The closing procession on 11 October 2026. It illustrates a finale bringing different participants together, rather than simply repeating the K Parade.

Choose an open viewing section rather than crossing repeatedly between the road and spectators to follow the procession. Put an ACC exhibition before or after it, not in the middle.
Connect ACC and Chungjang-ro without breaking up the parade
These plans draw on official announcements. Travel and visit times are suggested allowances for queues and breaks, not field measurements. The event’s current access restrictions and instructions take priority.

Practical details before you travel
Who this trip suits
Choose it for street performance and local culture in the city centre. A weekend date alone does not guarantee the parade you want. When combining festival streets with historic or memorial spaces, follow each site’s rules and atmosphere.
Station to event entrance
Compare Geumnamno 4-ga and Culture Complex as start and finish stations. Parade closures can remove your usual crossing: locate viewing areas and permitted crossings on the event map. Choose one side or section rather than cutting through crowds between stages.
Booking, costs and preparation
The official 2026 tourism listing described free admission, but food, individual activities and ACC exhibitions can have separate conditions. Recheck next-edition prices and bookings. ACC exhibition entry deadlines are independent of the street festival timetable.
Getting home and managing crowds
For Gwangju-Songjeong rail departures, start your return calculation with the walk out to the metro. A post-show café stop can erase your train margin. Put food and breaks before the performance and set a clear viewing finish time.
Rain, cancellation and sold-out alternatives
If rain reduces street programming, check the day’s indoor exhibitions at the Asia Culture Center. If closed or sold out, have a meal around Dongmyeong-dong and skip the festival section. Distinguish ACC’s outdoor plazas from indoor exhibition spaces.
Questions before you go
Is there a parade every day?
Daily programmes differ. Match the parade shown in promotional photographs to its actual date and route on the timetable.
Does one ticket cover ACC and the festival?
Do not assume so. Check the festival and each ACC exhibition or performance separately for bookings and prices.
