Daegu Chimac Festival: why this city for chicken and beer?

Editorial responsibility: HOPESNSAbout the editor and standards

Chicken and beer are available across Korea, so why travel to Daegu for them? Chimac is more than a generic outdoor beer event with chicken attached. It connects a city’s food-business history with the social experience of sharing different vendors’ food on a summer night.

Taste the city, not just more food

The chicken-city story behind the 2013 beginning

The official history places the first festival at Duryu Park in 2013. The organiser connects its setting to Daegu’s poultry and chicken-food businesses and the fried-gizzard alley at Pyeonghwa Market. Rather than memorising brand origins, consider how an everyday meal grows out of a city’s businesses and shopping streets.

Separate admission from the cost of your meal

18,000

Example fried chicken · KRW 18,000

The listing included a fried-chicken item at this price. It was not a standard across all vendors: compare the vendor and serving weight.

+ 6,000

Add two KRW 3,000 drinks

Using two listed KRW 3,000 beers gives a food-and-drink total of KRW 24,000, or KRW 12,000 each if split equally by two. Transport, extras and premium areas are excluded.

TABLE

Compare premium tables separately

The 2026 listing gave KRW 85,000 per reserved premium table. Do not compare it directly with a food bill without checking permitted party size, inclusions and time limits.

Alcohol is optional. Check accepted identification for purchases and include non-drinkers in the food-and-music plan.

Make one useful comparison, not a vendor-count challenge

Share a plain-fried and a sauced option and choose one comparison: texture, sweetness or heat. The aim is to discover a preference, not accumulate queues. If the Pyeonghwa Market story interests you, treat a market meal as another outing; it is not part of the same Duryu Park site.

An evening of food and music in one Duryu area

These plans draw on official announcements. Travel and visit times are suggested allowances for queues and breaks, not field measurements. The event’s current access restrictions and instructions take priority.

This allows for heat and queues. Verify the entrance actually open, not only the station exit that looks closest to a stage.

Start with one manageable food order. If time is short, drop 83 Tower and keep one performance plus a meal.

Practical details before you travel

Who this trip suits

Choose it for different chicken vendors and outdoor music in one outing. It may not suit a quiet meal or a heat-avoiding trip. Check the edition’s rules for non-drinking companions and any age-restricted zones rather than assuming every area is open to everyone.

Station to event entrance

Walk from Duryu toward the event entrance shown on the official map. The park is large: confusing E-World with the festival entrance can add walking. Allow more time than an ordinary station walk, and do not assume easy access simply because the event is near a metro station.

Booking, costs and preparation

Budget separately for general admission, food and any premium reserved area. Check party size, table allocation, included items and time limits before reserving. Verify accepted identification for alcohol purchases and payment options in the official instructions.

Getting home and managing crowds

Food queues between sets can stretch the evening. Set a last-order time before your rail deadline. For a Dongdaegu train, include transfers and movement inside the station. Compare an overnight stay if you intend to remain until closing.

Rain, cancellation and sold-out alternatives

In extreme heat, drop a daytime Duryu walk and extra 83 Tower visit; rest with an indoor meal around Banwoldang before deciding on the evening. If cancelled for rain, check the Daegu Modern History Museum and replace the event with an exhibition and central-city meal.

Questions before you go

Do I need a reserved table to buy food?

Check public sales areas versus reserved-only zones on the edition map. General admission does not guarantee a table, and food or outside-item rules can differ by area.

Does it suit a family trip?

Judge heat, sound and queue tolerance first. Avoid restricted zones and keep the option of a short visit rather than committing everyone to a long evening.
