Where should you stay in Seoul?
Compare Myeongdong, Hongdae, Seoul Station, Jongno and Gangnam by your plans and journey home—not popularity.
Mark your three must-visit places first. Compare Myeongdong and Jongno for the historic centre, Hongdae for evenings there, and Gangnam for repeated south-of-river plans. One intercity train trip alone is not a reason to base your whole stay at Seoul Station.
01Myeongdong
- Consider it when
- A useful starting comparison for central sightseeing, shopping and breaks back at your room. Your route changes depending on whether the property is nearer Myeongdong or Euljiro 1-ga Station.
- The trade-off
- Check for slopes toward Namsan. A “Myeongdong area” label does not guarantee a flat route or a short walk with luggage.
- Check before deciding
- Check the exit and crossings all the way to the property entrance, and ask about late check-in.
02Hongdae / Hongik University
- Consider it when
- Consider it when dining and evenings around Hongdae or Yeonnam are priorities. The airport railroad all-stop service is useful to compare; do not confuse it with the express service.
- The trade-off
- Near bars or performance venues, investigate possible night noise. For quieter sleep, compare the exact street and room orientation—not just the district.
- Check before deciding
- Check the route from the airport-rail platform via an exit and elevator to the property. Count walking inside the station too.
03Around Seoul Station
- Consider it when
- Compare this area when intercity rail or airport-rail journeys shape your trip. For an overnight stop, the actual station entrance and hotel location matter more than a station-name label.
- The trade-off
- The side of the station can mean a detour or a major road crossing. Being beside the station does not make every sightseeing trip convenient.
- Check before deciding
- Work backward from train departure, allowing for checkout, luggage and finding the platform.
04Jongno / Anguk / Insadong
- Consider it when
- Compare these areas for repeated visits to palaces, Insadong and historic streets. Jongno covers a broad area: check the actual nearest station.
- The trade-off
- Hanok and small properties can differ in lifts, bedding, sound insulation and luggage storage. Remember that the Bukchon area includes residential streets.
- Check before deciding
- Ask the property about stairs, room floor, quiet-access rules and luggage storage.
05Gangnam area
- Consider it when
- Compare a southern base if Gangnam, Samseong or Jamsil appears repeatedly in your plans. Gangnam and Samseong are different stations: pick the base closest to your actual destinations.
- The trade-off
- A palace-and-Hongdae-focused trip means repeated cross-river travel. Check the address and line rather than relying on the broad “Gangnam hotel” category.
- Check before deciding
- Check the journey home from your latest evening plan first. Compare airport access separately.
Four checks before booking
- Check the route to the actual entrance: exit, slope, stairs and elevators. Map distance alone is not enough.
- Ask about check-in cutoff, luggage storage, room floor and bedding. Explain any mobility requirements of your group.
- Compare the total cost, taxes and cancellation terms on the same basis. This is not a hotel price or quality ranking.
- Check the journey home from your latest activity and your departure-day route separately. An airport connection existing does not guarantee it runs at your required time.
A choice that keeps the trip manageable
For a short Seoul visit, compare keeping one base before changing hotels just for a different atmosphere. Luggage storage and waiting for check-in reduce usable time on a moving day.
