A slow day with fewer stairs and shorter walks

One-city example · not a multi-city route · Times are planning allowances, not measured travel or opening hours. Hotel travel is extra.

  1. 30 min allowance

Ichon lift → Museum Nadeulgil → National Museum of Korea

Short on time

Drop Yongsan Family Park, Itaewon and a second gallery; keep rest/return buffer.

Weather / admission changes

One permanent gallery, no outdoor garden; if closed, return to the hotel rather than a long new transfer.

Pins mark route anchors, not guaranteed restaurant/gallery/lift entrances. Confirm access on the day. Maps need internet; PDF links are clickable. On paper, search the Korean names.

Best for

Wheelchair or stroller users, older visitors, recovering travelers and companions

Realistic pace

Why this order works

Pick one city-specific alternative. Construction, lift outages and crowds change access, so same-day operator information takes priority.

REALISTIC ROUTE

Your day, step by step

Ichon example: access 30 + one gallery 60 + food/seated rest 60 + return 30 + contingency 60 = four hours. The official roughly ten-minute walking guidance is not a wheelchair travel time; lift queues, ramps and rest need separate allowance. Personal limits take priority over this schedule.

These are research-based planning allowances, not measured journey records or operator guarantees. Adjust for bookings, queues and your mobility needs.

Check official opening and facility maps
  1. 1

    30 min allowance

Ichon lift → Museum Nadeulgil → National Museum of Korea

Use the official lift map for exit 1 and the Nadeulgil direction near exit 2. Check onward surface ramps/crossings toward the museum west gate. Passage opening is not museum admission.

  2. 2

    60 min allowance

Information desk → one permanent gallery

Ask for usable toilets and seats before choosing one nearby gallery. Do not assume a wheelchair or stroller loan has been reserved for you.

  3. 3

    60 min allowance

Food and rest at the museum

Rest at one reachable food outlet rather than adding floors. If seating/toilet conditions are unsuitable, stop and confirm the return route with staff.

  4. 4

    90 min allowance

    Return to Ichon and contingency

30 min for return plus 60 for lifts/additional rest. This is not spare time to add Yongsan Family Park or Itaewon.

PLAN B

How to adapt on the day

If time is short

Drop Yongsan Family Park, Itaewon and a second gallery. Keep one exhibition and seated rest; shorten viewing, not the return margin.

Rain or unavailable admission

Keep one National Museum gallery and omit the outdoor gardens/Yongsan Family Park. If the museum is closed too, return to your accommodation instead of improvising a long transfer. In Busan, Centum City Station→Shinsegae is an alternative only after checking the actual lifts and seating.

When not to proceed

Cancel if an essential lift/passage fails and staff cannot confirm a suitable alternative. Do not carry a companion on stairs or use an unverified detour.

What to check before you go

  • This is not an accessibility certification. Check the station map and museum floor map separately, then reconfirm same-day operation with staff.
  • Special/children’s exhibitions differ from permanent admission. Ask before departure about luggage, mobility aids, loans and the toilet you need.
  • Save assistance requests and your accommodation address in Korean.
  • Measure the route via the entrance you will actually use.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Is the entire Ichon–museum approach indoors?+

No. Check the surface approach beyond Nadeulgil. A sheltered passage and a fully step-free route are not the same claim.

What if a loan wheelchair is unavailable?+

If a loan is essential, do not proceed without it. Ask the desk about support and return if nothing suitable is confirmed.

Can I use the contingency time for another gallery?+

First check energy, the return route and lift operation. This four-hour example protects rest and the return margin. Extend the overall visit if you choose another gallery rather than spending that margin.
