First day in Seoul: palace to Myeongdong

A 7h15 core route from Gyeongbokgung to Myeongdong, with named alternatives for rain and closures.

Moderate · outdoor palace and street walking, an indoor museum break
First day in Seoul: palace to Myeongdong

THE SHORT ANSWER

Visit one palace, eat near Anguk, then connect the Seoul Museum of Craft Art with Insadong. Finish with dinner and a street walk in Myeongdong. N Seoul Tower and Bukchon’s residential lanes are not part of this route, avoiding an extra queue and uphill detour.

Best for

First-time Seoul visitors who want history and an evening view

Realistic pace

Moderate · outdoor palace and street walking, an indoor museum break

Why this order works

Move east from Gwanghwamun and Gyeongbokgung to Anguk, then south through Insadong. For Myeongdong, use Jongno 3-ga Line 3 → Chungmuro → Line 4 to Myeongdong. Walking to the station and the transfer belong in the final time block.

REALISTIC ROUTE

Your day, step by step

Budget 120+75+90+60+90 = 435 minutes (7h15). These are editorial allowances for walking, waiting and visiting, not measured journeys or train schedules. Hotel travel and waiting for dusk are additional. The evening stop is Myeongdong’s streets, not tower admission.

  1. 1

    120 min

Gwanghwamun Square → Gyeongbokgung’s Geunjeongjeon and Gyeonghoeru area

Allow 20 min from station/square to entrance, 20 for ticketing and 80 inside. Special interior access to Gyeonghoeru is excluded. Gyeongbokgung normally closes on Tuesdays; check official exceptions before leaving.

  2. 2

    75 min

    Palace to Anguk → lunch

Allow 30 min for the walk/navigation from the palace exit and 45 for food. A famous restaurant’s queue uses your museum time. Without a booking, prioritize a place where you can sit and eat.

  3. 3

    90 min

Seoul Museum of Craft Art permanent galleries

Budget 15 min for access/entry, 60 for galleries and 15 for toilets/rest. It is near Anguk Exit 1. Children’s Museum sessions need separate booking. Regular Monday closure has public-holiday exceptions; the Children’s Museum closes every Monday.

  4. 4

    60 min

    Insadong-gil → Ssamziegil

Allow 15 min to reach Insadong-gil and 45 for the street and Ssamziegil shops. Individual shop hours vary. Skip upper levels if stairs or crowds are a problem and finish on the main street.

  5. 5

    90 min

Jongno 3-ga → change at Chungmuro → Myeongdong evening

Allow 40 min for station access, waiting and the transfer, then 50 for food and a short street walk. Check lift locations at both transfer stops if stairs are unsuitable. A cable-car queue or tower booking does not fit inside this allowance.

PLAN B

How to adapt on the day

If time is short

If behind schedule, cut the 45-minute Ssamziegil browsing stop first and just follow Insadong’s main street. If Myeongdong is too much, eat in Jongno and end there.

Rain or closures

In heavy rain, drop Gyeongbokgung and Ssamziegil and start at the Craft Museum near Anguk Exit 1. Add galleries after lunch or finish with a Myeongdong meal. If it is closed on Monday, this fallback fails too: change the day or choose a separate indoor day at the National Museum of Korea (Ichon) after checking opening.

When to change the plan

Do not start the full route with unconfirmed large-bag storage, unsuitable outdoor walking, or arrival after the museum’s last admission. Leave bags at accommodation and choose just Anguk or Myeongdong.

What to check before you go

  • The palace and Craft Museum close on different weekdays. Check each separately for Monday/Tuesday visits.
  • General Craft Museum galleries and booked Children’s Museum sessions are different visits.
  • Bukchon is not a shortcut in this plan. Check residential-zone visiting restrictions separately before adding it.
  • An exit number is not a promise of step-free access. Check facility maps and walking routes with luggage or a stroller.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Does the same route work on Tuesday?+

It is Gyeongbokgung’s usual closing day. Without a special opening notice, omit the palace and start at the Craft Museum. Substituting another palace changes travel and reservation conditions.

Does this include an N Seoul Tower visit?+

No: the evening is a street-level Myeongdong visit. If the tower is your priority, remove Ssamziegil and shopping, then budget separately for transport, queues and admission.

What if the Craft Museum is closed and it is raining?+

The indoor fallback for this route is unavailable. Rather than adding wet lanes, check the National Museum’s opening and rebuild around Ichon, or move the outdoor itinerary to another day.
